when we were running our own SEO.

Two years ago we were running a small portfolio of operator-owned SaaS sites and a veterinary telehealth practice (RexVet). All of them needed SEO content. None of them had a marketing team.

So we did what every founder does: we cobbled together a stack. Ahrefs for keyword research. Surfer for briefs. ChatGPT for drafts. A human contractor to polish them. WordPress to publish. Five tools, three people, somewhere around 48 hours per article — most of it spent ferrying data between tabs that should have already known about each other.

The handoffs were where the value leaked. Briefs got reinterpreted. Drafts drifted from the SERP-winning shape we'd just paid Surfer to identify. Internal links never matched the topic clusters we'd mapped in the audit. Each tool was excellent at its slice. None of them knew about the others.
